OUR MUSIC

We are blessed at St Barnabas to enjoy lovely music during our services, both "in season" in the sanctuary and also during the hot summer months when services move to the more informal Parish Hall.

During "the season" while we celebrate the Eucharist weekly in the sanctuary, we are blessed to enjoy organ music from the very talented Dr. Charles F. von Gunten, CAGO.
Dr. von Gunten has pursued church music as an avocation for more than 40 years. Although he studied the organ as an undergraduate at Brown University, he learned his organist skills primarily through private lessons and apprenticeship in church positions with progressively more responsibility. Two positions were particularly formative.
At St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, during college, he assisted in an Anglo-Catholic parish where a 16-voice mixed volunteer and paid choir sang classical repertoire including a full Missa Brevis and 2 anthems each week from medieval through contemporary composers. At Augustana Lutheran Church in Denver, during medical school, he accompanied a 50-voice adult choir and a 3,500 member congregation. It was there he discovered the joy of enthusiastic hymn singing. He now studies with Dr. Richard Fitzgerald. He achieved the Colleague of the American Guild of Organists status in 2021.
We are blessed that Dr. von Gunten recently retired from a career in medicine and divides his time between homes in San Diego and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.  While he is in San Diego he graciously joins us weekly at St Barnabas whee he carefully selects and curates each weeks musical selections.

Providing inspiration to break from what some have called the Episcopal tradition of arriving just in the nick of time for the opening processional and departing immediately after service, Dr. von Gunten thrills us with themed Preludes and Postludes which are must listens.
