St. Barnabas Borrego Springs Timeline

1966
The Beginning
St. Barnabas begins as a Preaching Station in Borrego Springs under the Diocese of Los Angeles.
1974
Reestablished in Borrego Springs
The Diocese of San Diego reestablishes St. Barnabas.
Retired priest
Rev. Robert E. Lenhard, known as the “Desert Priest,” takes up residence.
Services are held in private homes.
1975
First Eucharist
The first Eucharist service is celebrated on
St. Barnabas’ Day at the Methodist Community Church.
1976
Mission Church
St. Barnabas becomes a Mission in the Diocese of San Diego.
Services move to St. Richard’s Catholic Church.
By-laws and budgets are adopted, the Women of St. Barnabas is formed, and outreach begins.
1984
Building a Permanent Home
Ground is broken for a new church on donated land.
June 1986
Church Completed
The church and Parish Hall are completed — fully paid for at the time of completion.
September 1986
First Service in the New Church
January 4, 1987
Consecration
St. Barnabas Episcopal Church is formally consecrated.
Late 1980s–2000s
Seasonal Years
Visiting priests lead services.
St. Barnabas functions largely as a seasonal “Snowbird” church.
2010
New Rector
Rev. Laura Brecht is called as Rector.
2010–2021
Community Leadership
Rev. Brecht serves both church and community, co-founding the Borrego Ministers Association.
Fr. George Keith also serves during this period.
2015–Present
Continuing Ministry
Fr. Michael Plekon assists and continues to serve.
2022
A New Chapter
Fr. David Madsen is called as Rector.
